nef's theoretical new economics programme aims to build a framework for a new economics which promotes real well-being (rather than financial wealth), environmental sustainability and social justice.
This framework will incorporate the latest thinking from the different branches of (alternative) economics and the social sciences with the aim of drawing out the practical policy implications. Where gaps or conflicts between these ideas exist, nef aims to promote academic debate and research by raising the profile of the issues through hosting discussions and other events. The work will be disseminated to a wide audience including people in government (especially policy-makers), businesses and NGOs, people learning economics in schools and colleges and the general public. The work will also be used to strengthen the theoretical underpinning of all of nef's work.
The first task we are engaged in is mapping out the latest ideas in non-mainstream economics such as behavioural economics, ecological economics, institutional economics in a series of briefings.
