new global economy

nef believes that the global economy isn’t working for people, or the planet.  It is becoming increasingly impossible to escape the conclusion that the current paradigm of economic development is not working. It is unlikely that the Millennium Development Goals will not be met across most of the developing world, and we are fast approaching the point at which climate change will become irreversible. Our global economic system is simply not delivering on our social and environmental goals.

nef believes that there is a real chance for a more fundamental shift in the global economic system than has been possible in recent decades. We will spend the next few years laying the foundations for a coherent and concrete alternative to the current paradigm of the global economy, backed by a broad and inclusive coalition of global civil society. We will begin by questioning a number of fundamental preconceptions about how we think about policy, and how global policy is made.

nef’s New Global Economy programme works closely with our Climate Change programme, and our work on food economies.

re-thinking poverty
nef believes that current approaches to poverty raise a number of serious conceptual and analytical issues which have potentially important implications for how we think about poverty and crucially, how we address it
re-thinking international finance
re-thinking international finance is building on the foundations of nef’s Jubilee Research programme to develop a coherent proposal for a new international financial architecture which will serve, not undermine, our social and environmental objectives.
