What gets counted, counts. So nef is redefining the way we understand and measure progress. This means new ways of measuring what is missed by traditional evaluation and impact measurement.
At the national level we have challenged the economic orthodoxy that GDP is a good indicator of well-being with an alternative indicator - the index of sustainable economic welfare (ISEW) - which shows a very different picture. And to get away from centralised targets set by London bureaucrats, our work at the local level allows communities to develop their own indicators of quality of life.
Our approach to evaluation is based on participation and strengthening capacity. Different ways of working by socially responsible businesses, social enterprises and the voluntary sector require new methods to capture economic, social and environmental impacts.
Ultimately society is here to promote the happiness of its citizens.
