The participation and democracy programme at nef offers facilitation and tools for participation, consultation and visioning projects.
Some recent examples of our consultancy work include:
London Borough of Greenwich
nef designed and ran three training workshops for Greenwich's new Neighbourhood Panels. These were made up of local people with mostly no previous experience of neighbourhood renewal, so the training was designed to enhance their confidence in dealing with officers and councillors as much as to increase their skills.
Greater London Authority (GLA)
The GLA wanted to find a way of consulting on their ambient noise strategy. We designed a Democs kit that informed people about the topic and helped them make their minds up about it. 29 people spent two hours playing Democs. Most liked the event - despite the fact that we lost 40 minutes to two fire alarms!
'Democs proved to be a useful and innovative way of enabling citizens to discuss complex policy issues. By using gaming techniques it is possible to involve and engage Londoners who might not be prepared to take part in other forms of public consultation.'
Guy Rubin, Consultation Manager, GLA
Ryedale District Council
Imagine is a conversational, question-based, method, where the questions are designed to identify the best of what is happening now, to provide a solid foundation for a vision of a desirable future. nef worked with a local core group to develop questions suitable for that part of north Yorkshire, then helped the members of the group to interview a range of people using the questions, analyse the stories that emerged, and from them develop a vision that became the heart of the community plan.
Clare Slater, Systems and Policy Officer for Ryedale District Council described the vision as "a contract drawn up between the council and the community"
"I'm left with a sense of hope that a vision can be dealt with strategically" - Member of the core group
