We are moving to a world of greater participation. In science, for instance, the language of participation has shifted from the one-way ‘public understanding of science’ to the two-way ‘science communication’.
When a difficult issue comes up - Iraq, genetically modified food, designer babies - a politician stands up and says "We need a debate". But we need new mechanisms for holding such debates and for engaging people who have become disillusioned. nef is working on:
- democs: enable small groups of people to engage with complex public policy issues, to find out about them, express their views and seek common ground.
- democracy café: will provide a new space in which all-comers can discuss constructively the issues that concern them.
- anti-apathy: combines spoken word, film, and live music in events that explore the vital issues of our time whilst inspiring the desire to get involved with change.
