present work and future projects

env5.JPG

We are continuing our work on conceptualising and measuring well-being, and are also conducting research into the relationship between well-being and the environment.

Current projects include:

  • Well-being and Sustainable Development: Defra (the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) has commissioned three projects on well-being to meet the Governments’ commitments in the 2005 sustainable development strategy Securing the Futurenef has been commissioned to explore the links between current and future levels of well-being and sustainable development.
  • European Social Surveynef was part of a successful application to the European Social Survey (ESS) to design 50 questions of personal and social well-being into the next ESS round in 2006.  This will allow comprehensive international comparisons to be made across at least 25 countries in Europe.
  • Gross National Happiness in Bhutan: Nic Marks is an advisor to the Centre for Bhutanese Studies (part of the Civil Service in Bhutan). He is advising on the construction of an indicator for the Bhutanese concept of promoting GNH instead of GNP.
  • Regional Index of Sustainable Economic Well-being (ISEW): Three English Regional Development Agencies (East Midlands, Yorkshire & Humberside and South East England), and NHS Health Scotland have commissioned nef to construct an economic, social and environmental macro cost-benefit analysis of their regions.

Other work on well-being at nef includes:

  • Health policy based on needs: with NHS Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
  • Older People’s well-being: with Portsmouth City Council
  • Arts and well-being: development of a toolkit for promoting and measuring local well-being with the Independent Theatre Group.
  • Good Jobs in practice: a staff well-being survey with the Department of Health’s Corporate Human Resources department.
