New approaches to supporting independent living: Carebanks

Empowering people to contribute both to their own care and that of others.

We are piloting new approaches to providing support for independent living within our communities using a reciprocal model that is financed with time and money. Working alongside two partners, Age UK Bromley and Holy Cross Community Trust, we aim to develop and implement new financially sustainable approaches that support people to live independently in the community. The financing model incorporates both money and time currencies, building on the timebanking approach. It enables people who would traditionally be seen as recipients of care to contribute themselves and to support others, which in turn helps to improve their health and wellbeing. nef is evaluating the pilots using approaches that incorporate accounting for wellbeing, measuring social return on investment and analysing the components of co-production.
