Tackling health inequalities: sustainability and community

nef is an active contributor to the European Review on the Social Determinants of Health and the Health Divide, which aims to develop a Europe-wide health policy in 2020.

The European Office of the WHO has commissioned a European Review on the Social Determinants of Health and the Health Divide. The Review is conducted by a Consortium of experts and institutions chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot. Its purpose is to identify evidence relevant to the European context and translate these into policy proposals. It will feed into the development of a renewed European Regional Health Policy, Health 2020, especially where it relates to the social determinants of health.

nef has contributed to this review through the Task Group on Sustainability and Community, chaired by Anna Coote, our Head of Social Policy, which has produced a report on the impacts on natural, built and social environments on health and health inequalities, drawing on evidence from across the European region; it is due for publication later in 2012.  The work is supported by the World Health Organisation.
