Executive Summary
Climate Talk is a Democs kit which aims to help people understand the science of climate change, the threat that it poses and what they can do to help.
Climate Talk’s proven benefit is deepening understanding and broadening perspectives. Participating in Climate Talk has been shown to increase participants’ level of understanding of climate change and made them more optimistic about our ability to reduce the future impacts of climate change. Participants sait that it “makes you think”, “shows you things you didn’t realise”, “raises awareness”, “helps dispel myths”, “reveals the connections between the different issues” and“encourages people to criticise their own opinions”.
It’s also a good tool for identifying where different people stands in relation to climate change. Participants get to know each others’ level of knowledge and their willingness to act on different agendas. This made it work well for mature groups whose central mission is not related to climate change and newly formed groups setting out to tackle climate change.
Climate Talk was funded by Defra’s Climate Challenge Fund. Some 350 kits were distributed between January 2007 and February 2008. Climate Talk was played by over 1,000 people and 235 people were trained to facilitate it.
